We want you…
September 11th, 2009
…to join this group. If you are experienced in any of the following fields:
- .ass typesetting
- performing Optical Character Recognition on video
- the Japanese language (experience is a must, Japanese 101 does not count.)
Then we want you! to mosey on over to #yuki-recruits@irc.rizon.net and talk with an oper (@) or higher. We are also accepting applications for TLC-ers, timers, editors, QCers, and maybe anything else you’d like to ask to do. Any questions, comments, or general remarks should be directed to that channel.
Experience is preferred.
lets grow and take over the interweb! go go nol brigde.
Great to hear you’ve decided to continue, Yuki. It’d be a shame to give up now, when you’ve come so far. As a writer with an almost fanatical dedication to grammar (and the Pope), I’d be willing to serve as a QCer, but I have no experience, and little time, so it’s probably best if someone else takes the position.
Yay. I’m there!
we’re *I personally wanted to say this, don’t know about other* sorry to be a burden for you
but thanks a lot
Do you require ass kickers too or just ass typesetters?
It rather dissapoints me to see the small turnout in comments on this after all the hype on the last thread. While I ppersonally don’t feel I have enough experience – nor high enough computing power – to efffectively offer my services for typesetting, I really hope others are arriving in that IRC room.
I think most ppl offering their services would go to the IRC channel. I hopped in and left my e-mail.
Hello again, this is compmaster from [Geeksquads].
Just out of curiosity, Why do you need OCR? (Optical Character Recognition)? Or do you guys mean just people able to read japanese?
Hmm… Since I actually do sub an anime(I release Shugo Chara)… I know a thing or two about .ass typesetting, so I could give a few pointers about it if you wanted… Although, for my releases, I use 100% softsubs… So if super flashy karaoke subs are what you are looking for, then I suggest you get someone experienced in AFX.
I too, and kind of disappointed by the community at large here… Not to be insulting or anything… but you people are all talk…
Also… uhh… If you guys are in need of a website, I’d be glad to help(Hosting & maintaining). I’m not sure if you’ll just use nol888.com…
By the way, where did Yuki get her raws from? The season 1 rebroadcast episodes were true HD, not upscaled like the new season 2 episodes and they all looked unbelievably sharp. I would love to see the rest of the season like this, even if I have to watch them in raw (I’ve already seen them enough to know the plot).
@ AW – I didn’t think that the second season was upscaled… I thought the second season was broadcasted in 1080(Or at least that’s what the TV said), but the TV stations knock down the quality a lot to save money… (If you actually watched it on TV, some of the commercials looked SOOOO much higher in quality than the actual episode.)
If you look at Yuki’s releases, it’s seems as though it was not ripped from the TV broadcast…(Since there are no artifacts from the ‘logoaway’ filter which can be seen in other raws.) If I didn’t know better, I would say that Yuki got it from a blu-ray disc… but I haven’t seen any released blu-ray discs for The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya, so that can’t be it… Can it?
—
The only other option I could think of is that Yuki used the DVD and upscaled it…(And also put it through a lot of filters.) If you rip the DVD correctly, you can achieve almost 720p quality, after a lot of filters.
The TV broadcast raws are horrible in terms of quality… I don’t think we’ll be able to find another high quality Raw until they release it on disc.

Ok, TRY to read the initial post properly before you post ok? The community is not all just talk. Yuki’s message CLEARLY states that all talk about the subject should be directed to the IRC channel, so that’s why nobody is here discussing it anymore, because they are all over at the IRC channel! That should have been blatantly obvious! ;-/ jeez….
Also, that Yuki’s releases of the season 1 episodes are so sharp and don’t look upscaled, is because they probably AREN’T upscaled, but are probably ripped from the season 1 DVD’s, not the TV broadcast. Compmaster, if you had read AW’s post properly, you would have seen that he said that “The season 1 rebroadcast episodes were true HD, not upscaled like the new season 2 episodes and they all looked unbelievably sharp.”, meaning that he is talking about the re-runned season 1 episodes beeing crystal sharp, not the new season 2 one’s. The new episodes aren’t all available in high definition DVD format yet, but the old episodes ARE, and have been for a long time! Season 2 runs BOTH OLD and NEW episodes, in case you haven’t noticed. Sorry if I sound pissed, but people that don’t read posted threads properly before they post annoy me. Now head over to the IRC channel if you have anything to say about the matter, not here. It’l be on deaf ears otherwise anyway.
@ Rokudaime – Sorry if I angered you…
I DO go on the IRC… but everytime I go there, no one talks… I think that’s just because of the different time zones… and everyone is afk… Posting here is better, since it’s like an archive of chat, so that people WILL see your comment.
I’m pretty sure I read the post correctly. I clearly understand that he/she meant that the first season was clearer in quality than the second season. But the fact of the matter is that in Japan, they do broadcast in High Definition. The broadcasted signal is in High Definition, but the actual show seems to be lowered in quality for probably many reason. This applies to the rebroadcast of the first season as well.
As for as I know, there are NO high definition DVDs out for sale for this anime. There probably never will be any future releases in High def DVDs either. From my knowledge, Toshiba announced that they would stop manufacturing HD DVD products almost 2 years ago. Now REGULAR DVDs of “The Melancholy of Suzumiya Haruhi” have been readily available for quite some time.
I hope this clears up any misconceptions that we may have had.
Again, sorry for making you angry, but I still stand with my current views on this.
Ah, ok, what you are talking about are HD DVD’s. That’s something different entirely. My definition of high quality is the regular DVD’s, because they are much sharper and prettier than the way they were when they aired on TV. They are plenty good enough. Back when Season 1 of Haruhi was new, HD hadn’t actually really become main stream yet, now that I think about it. As for the fact that the TV broadcast of the show is in poor quality even though Japan do broadcast in HD, that’s something that is rather normal for pretty much all majorly popular anime shows. Bleach and Naruto being good examples, if you watch those. Dattebayo, who currently subs Bleach, and used to sub Naruto, have put a whole thread about this with proof, in order to stop certain people from continuing to complain about their releases not being in 720p. I reckon the most natural reason why the developers of these animes air them in low quality is so more people will buy the DVD’s, so they can get the show in higher quality. Again, high quality not meaning 1080p. To most people, 720p is considered high quality. 480p is low/standard quality, and 1080p is HD/Blueray extreme high quality.
720p is the new standard.
480p low
720p normal
1080p high
unless you have a 10 year old pc that doesn’t even have a 19 inch monitor that can’t display more than 1280×720 pixels.
@zaj
Well yeah, but imo 720p is more than good enough, and anyone not content with it and complaining about not getting 1080p are just whiners. 480p is kinda crap though, though a whole lot of fansubs are in this quality. Oh, and my computer is new and hardcore.
@zaj
Oh, and also, important distinction; while 720p is the standard quality for alot of fansubs (though far from all), and on most DVD’s unless they are 1080p like some are now, the standard quality on mainstream anime broadcasts is NOT 720p, but 480p. like I mentioned, even Naruto and Bleach air in 480p on TV-Tokyo in Japan, and DB proves this in their thread, so go over there if you don’t believe me. Season 2 of Haruhi also airs in 480p. As did Clannad, Lucky Star, and pretty much all other Kyoto Animation series aswell.
Not trying to be a nag or something, but how’s this coming along? I’ve been waiting for Yuki, but if new releases are not coming out for a while, I want to watch Haruhi with a.f.k. subs, and then later archive the Yuki releases instead. So a status report would be highly appreciated.
Thanks.
Yeah I’m curious about how the team’s coming along. I left my e-mail and never got anything back, that has to be a good sign; at least they’re not severely desperate for help.
Look forward to seeing good things from you guys.
My guess is that this will probably take a while, so you should probably download a.f.k or Chihiro’s subs for the meantime(I allready did long ago).
correction: IN the meantime. Bad english, sorry.
Alright, thanks for the answer!
I’m stilling anxiously looking forward to these releases, though. So gambatte, Yuki!
So, um, since I don’t even have IRC, and have never used it, how is this coming along? Any progress? Anyone?
If and when you guys get around to “Someday in the Rain”, be sure to leave the teaser for the “Disappearance” movie at the end!
Wait, what!? Teaser for the Disappearance movie!? Does that mean there will be a Season 3 with Disappearance!?
Aha! a movie! well, better than nothing I suppose. Hope it turns out good. They should have had it in the anime of S2 in the first place. For people interested: http://www.sankakucomplex.com/2009/10/09/the-disappearance-of-suzumiya-haruhi-movie-announced/
Semantic as it may be, the new episodes weren’t a second series, but a strategy to put the chronology in order and fill in the gaps from the original run, quite clearly intended to get everyone on the same level before the Disappearance movie. This is probably a plan they’ve had in effect since 2007, when the Disappearance teasing (or “trolling”, if you must use that dreadful term) first began.
Ye. Still, the Disappearance arc is only like the 4th of the so far 9(nr.10 is in the works) novels the series is based on, so I am far from satisfied….much more content to go.
Saying that, they’ve already adapted most of the fifth and sixth novels (”Endless Eight”, “Day of Sagittarius”, “Live Alive” and “Adventures of Mikuru Asahina Episode 00″). It’s only really the seventh and ninth arcs, and a few more short stories, left to do after this.
There’s still 6 short stories to go (not including Haruhi theater), and two full novels (not including Disappearance). Plus on top of that, book 10. Anyway, you’ve all got Intrigues to look forward to because imo it’s the best story so far (only slightly better than Disappearance).
Hmmm, so basically, once the movie is over with, novels 1-6+8 will have been mostly covered, except a few short stories, and mostly only novels 7 and 9(+10) remain, is that correct?
Yes, apart from novel 8 hasn’t been adapted yet. Although the two short stories in it are pretty stand alone, so they could well be done before spring next year (unless this is already the plan and I’m missed something?).
Snowy Mountain Syndrome can’t be adapted until after Disappearance anyway due to some of the content, but including Snowy Mountain Syndrome there are four short stories left.
I have no idea what to expect. I’m reading Yen Press’ translations of the novels (which are very good, and should be supported by as many fans as possible), as they’re released. While I have a lot of respect for the fan translations, the writing style is too clinical and awkward for my grammar-obsessed mind. It kept pulling me out of the story.
Well, I don’t like or have the patience for reading books or novels, including light novels(I love visual novels though), so if it doesn’t appear in the manga or anime, I’l miss it. Do any of you guys know how much has been covered in the manga so far? And do you think the rest will appear aswell?
if anyone here in the comments wants to learn to time or typeset with Aegisub I can teach you
im on irc on rizon under techguru
@Rokudaime
dattebayo just doesnt wanna upgrade anything they do since they release movies in that screwed up resolution of 12280×1024
one piece is the only show in 720p
bleach and naruto arent aired in 720p but elements fansubs look alot better on my tv than dattebayo
@just
Indeed they do. Taka’s sub of Naruto looks so pretty compared to DB, I’m actually happy they dropped the show. DB has started to translate all techniques into english without the japanese names first in Bleach now too, which really sucks,so I am actually really happy Taka are the one’s doing Naruto now. They have DB beat in every regard in my oppinion. Wish they were doing Bleach too.
So did you guys actually get a group together and got subs in the pipeline? Or is Yuki pretty much dead?
What the guy above me said. I haven’t heard anything from any of you about anything being done, nor has there been a new post in ages.
I’ve been wondering the same thing. I don’t mind waiting as long as it takes – I already have all the episodes in various formats – but I’m not even sure that Yuki is still alive.
any news on this? been 3 weeks since last post here
I’m considering this group dead. I don’t know what happened to all the people who were so eager to join in and keep it alive, but we haven’t heard anything from any of them in ages now, so I guess they were all talk. I have no choice but to stick with a.f.k’s poor video quality releases I guess….
All that would be nice, is a quote from Yuki.N or someone to state the EXACT ordeal with Haruhi. A simple ‘It’s Dropped’ would suffice, because right now, I have no idea what’s going on…:(
Ok for all those wondering “It’s Dropped”. You guys might as well get them from gg, afk or chihiro if you want to watch them. If you want HD versions so you can achieve them, you might as well wait for HD raws to show up or blu ray releases. For a show like haruhi your scared no fan group will provide them? Even if they don’t sub the HD versions, you can still easily find HD raws of haruhi and d/l the subs from mazui (you can d/l off their sites, they provide them as scripts) and use a tool like mkvtoolnix (since it is very likely the raws will be in mkv if they’re HD) to add the subs in. You can even edit the scripts yourself if you find typos or errors.
It’s quite sad how all those people talked about keeping this alive, and offering to help in various ways, and then when it comes down to it, they were all talk.
Well I for one went to the irc, everyone was afk, so I left my email. Never heard anything back.
Exactly. Lots of them never even showed up on irc, even after all their talk about helping and such. That’s pretty lame.
its not just about wanting to help..also about having the knowledge and expertise to be able to help “well”
and if u guys really want yuki to finish the last few eps…msg NOL88 on the irc…no one else matters since hes the main guy for yuki
So is this project dead?
Well, acording to JennyxD it is, but I would really like for Yuki or someone to confrim this.
@Rokudaime
And who is this “someone” you want to confirm for you… As JennyxD said, it is dropped, you can even assume so seeing there has been absolutely no activity on this site whatsoever for who knows how long. Yuki has already said that he would want to stop, this post was probably just here to keep people begging to continue with the subbing to stop.
