Show Drop Imminent

Given the fact that school is starting very soon, I doubt I will have time to sub things solo. Therefore I am considering dropping Haruhi.

So, thanks for the ride, guys.

thestuff: Agreed, I’d be willing to help out with typesetting and timing and maybe encoding if Yuki’s willing to give a few tips. If you could help translate and we could use the other scripts as a baseline, the raws are available if Yuki’s willing to tell us which ones, and how on earth he’s filtered them so well, we have something of a typesetting standard to work to…

Anyone else willing to help out to prevent a drop?

I would have to do some research, and maybe a few tips from Yuki, but I have a good rig that could be used for encoding. I’d be happy to help out if somebody is willing to give a newb a chance. :o )

I have some experience with encoding, using avisynth and MeGUI, so I could prpably help out if I could get some pointers from Yuki on how til filter the video, so it looks similar to previous releases.

Sounds like a plan, then? Of course that is, if we get Yuki’s approval…

Tell us at least howto make this excellent quality of your videos or make only vids and we’ll mux subtitles on our own.
Of course, good luck in school Yuki :)

I’m down to do timing, seems easy enough, just time consuming.

  9. August 31st, 2009 at 03:25 | #9

It does indeed. The beauty of the TFEI terminals is, there’s so many of us. Yuki isn’t just an entity on her own. She’s the front-end interface to an amorphous entity of pure data and information, scattered across space and time. So of course the internets can help you out. :)

It’s up to you, Yuki. We understand you won’t have the time because of school. We don’t mind it going very slow, because these aren’t speedsubs like Mazui does, but archive, probably until BDs come along. And we’re willing to help out; even to take it over, if you don’t want to do it anymore—and frankly, we can all understand that after the horror that was Endless Eight (but they can’t pull that again, we have a better idea where they’re going from here), and of course the relentless pressure of RL. Good luck with that, btw. :)

We’d very much like to know how you’ve been getting such good video quality given the execrable raw quality; the avisynth script/filters you’ve been using? The x264 build and settings?

We await your input and decision.

    Permission?

Copypasta from Yuki’s last 720p encode:

    options: cabac=1 ref=5 deblock=1:0:0 analyse=0×3:0×133 me=umh subme=7 psy_rd=1.0:0.0 mixed_ref=1 me_range=32 chroma_me=1 trellis=1 8x8dct=1 cqm=0 deadzone=21,11 chroma_qp_offset=-2 threads=6 nr=0 decimate=1 mbaff=0 bframes=5 b_pyramid=1 b_adapt=2 b_bias=0 direct=3 wpredb=1 keyint=250 keyint_min=25 scenecut=40 rc=2pass bitrate=1729 ratetol=1.0 qcomp=0.60 qpmin=10 qpmax=51 qpstep=4 cplxblur=20.0 qblur=0.5 ip_ratio=1.40 pb_ratio=1.30 aq=1:1.00

I would increase subme (if it doesn’t take forever) and use the new mb-tree, as well as lowering aq-strength and using –tune ssim.

But what’s probably going to matter the most is what filters he used to sharpen/denoise/deblock the RAW.

I do hope you will be able to do the Season 1 rebroadcasts at least. You use the best raws it seems. There isn’t much to worry about as everybody has somewhat crappy raws for a lot of the season 2 stuff (is it not being broadcast HD in Japan?)

I really want to see the rest of the season 1 episodes in the highest quality HD, so I hope that mazui or someone else will use top quality raws. Season 2, I’m not sure there are any good raws.

If you find freetime, please just take the time to do the true HD episodes.

I mentioned a few posts back that I subbed a couple of Miku Hatsune videos… since Phizzy posted shared some of his work, I may as well share some of mine–

yeah i just started school too and i’m having trouble finding to just watch anime i mean the fact that you do everything find the raws, do the encoding and the translating all on your own if you didn’t drop it i would think you were crazy. but hopefully you will approve of this small but loyal fanbase of yours to continue your work on your behalf cuz i just care about quality if i really wanted to watch the show fast i would’ve probably streamed it off of megavideo or veoh but as everyone here is saying the quality of your work is better than everyone… the good note is that atleast you ended at the end or endless eight… well good luck with school.

  19. September 1st, 2009 at 00:28 | #19

    @wa!
In my experience, increasing subme any further is slower with no real noticeable effect (especially at 350MB). Also, mbtree breaks b-pyramid.

    @everyone else
I’m thinking about it. It’s definitely not at the top of my mind, but not all the way back anyway.

For one thing, the karaoke needs to be re-done now that the official OP/ED lyrics are out and I’m too lazy to do that. More after the break.

  20. September 1st, 2009 at 11:53 | #20

Well, if we were to take over, would we have all the people needed? I’m not sure of the ‘full list’ of jobs that’s required for a sub.

  21. naaget
    September 1st, 2009 at 13:06 | #21

This is a list of the positions that goes into most fansubs:

    - Raw Provider
    - Translator
    - Translation checker
    - Editor
    - Timer
    - Typesetter
    - Encoder
    - Quality Checker
    - Distro

Of course, a translator is preferred, but not requiered if we use the translations of a.f.k or some other group.

  22. thestuff
    September 1st, 2009 at 13:17 | #22

    Right.
    - Raw Provider – ?
    - Translator – me
    - Translation checker
    - Editor – ?
    - Timer – Myoukochou
    - Typesetter – Myoukochou
    - Encoder – nokternl/naaget
    - Quality Checker – ?
    - Distro – ?

Come on people, step up to the plate! We’re going to need to get this sorted if we’re going to convince Yuki that this plan of action won’t be a complete failure.

  23. naaget
    September 1st, 2009 at 13:49 | #23

    Just clearifying a few things:

Raw Provider – Anyone who is willing to download 5-6 raws to confirm which has the best quality can do this.

Editor – Someone who is either a native English-speaker with good grammatic skills, or someone from another country with insane english grammatic skills. Me, for instance is from Scandinavia and is not good enough to see which english sentences look THE BEST and is easy to read. Not yet anyway…

Quality Checker – Everybody who had a hand in the production of the episode should contribute here. Also, it would be great if one or two people who did not take part in the production could check, to get a different point of view, but that’s not a necessity.

Distro – Anyone with a good upload-bandwidth, so the torrents are quickly up and running. Also, it would be great if we could use some IRC-Bots.

  24. September 1st, 2009 at 15:02 | #24

If nobody else is willing, I’ll try my hand at being the editor. I’m in the process of writing a novel, I read grammar books for pleasure, and I constantly correct people on their spelling. I’d venture my English skills are up to the task. I’ve never done anything remotely like this, though, so if Yuki DID take me on, my hand would need a little holding.

    chen :

I’m pretty sure it is, yes.

    *update*

    - Raw Provider – ?

    - Translation checker – ?
    - Editor – Manwards/applechewer/Mike/chen
    - Timer – Myoukochou/C.R./chen

    C.R. :
    TLQC

    What’s this? I’m guessing a specific form of QC…

People reacted to this more than I expected!
So we just need someone to find the good raws, someone to check my translation, and someone with good enough Internet to distribute. We’re almost there!
And also, I never said this before, but good luck at school!

  32. September 2nd, 2009 at 08:14 | #32

    >Raw Provider – Anyone who is willing to download 5-6 raws to confirm which has the best quality can do this.

Actually, these days it’s just someone who can get the transport stream somehow.

  34. naaget
    September 2nd, 2009 at 15:19 | #34

    @CryptWizard

That would be the best, yes, but then we would need a capper (would have been awesome). Unfortunatly, cappers are a scarce resource, so to be realistic – it’s someone who can download the pretty horrible raws and find the best of the worst… I can propably do this until someone better comes along.

  35. naaget

Right, now, I’d like to interject with one point of reason here:

I think that us all getting together to keep the sub going is a good idea *of last resort*. At the same time, however, I really think that this may be giving the wrong message to Yuki: that we don’t appreciate his awesome subs or have a need for him to put them out. While obviously we don’t need them, as there are other, lower-quality, versions, available. But I for one greatly appreciate Yuki’s subs: they are high-quality and have always had the best translations.

All in all, I still would like Yuki to continue them, and I would like to add that I would willingly help put them together if you decide you can keep doing them with some assistance. Hey, I can even get school credit for it, so it’s no trouble for me. Please consider it.

  38. thestuff
    September 3rd, 2009 at 20:40 | #38

Good point. We were being a bit affrontive.
Yuki’s subs are fantastic and I’m sure everyone would like him to carry on with them, because it’s obvious he puts a lot of effort and time that he could well have benefited somewhere else. So we are in his debt in that he has put himself out for our sake. this plan is only meant to be a ‘fallback’ if he absolutely has to give them up, but as others said, if he can keep going and only do an episode say, once a month, this is still better than nothing.
    Hats off.

  39. Me
    September 3rd, 2009 at 21:39 | #39

Glad to see you people are getting together to try keep these awesome subs coming. I would love to help, but I have no experience with audio/video stuff, my download is slow, and my upload is slow. However if you need some extra help, I guess I could, my English is pretty good, and I am quick to learn.

  40. nokternl
    September 4th, 2009 at 00:19 | #40

    @ Mike
You are correct. The way the posts read is that we were all planning a hostile takeover. :o )

While I can speak for no-one else, that was not my intention. I volunteered my services as an assistance to Yuki, nothing more. If Yuki doesn’t need my help, then that’s cool, I just wanted Yuki to understand that help is out there if needed.

  41. C.R.
    September 4th, 2009 at 02:05 | #41

ditto to what nokternl and Mike said.heh,I’m hardly the hostile takeover type as well :p

  42. September 4th, 2009 at 03:20 | #42

Agreed. In an ideal world, Yuki would continue by himself. IF he can’t, however, then I’m willing to help out. I think this is a nice example of people on the internet actually helping each other out and trying to do something worthwhile, which is refreshingly different from the tiresome apathy and ignorance you usually find in this, and other, communities.

Same sentiment indeed! Yuki is awesome.

It’s simply that Yuki doesn’t have to do it alone, if he feels he can’t, but I wouldn’t mind slow releases either.

Hello. This is compmaster from [Geeksquads](a makeshift fansubbing group).

I’ve been a fan of Yuki Fansubs for quite some time now, and I just wanted to say that it’s sad to see it happen like this. I know that other outside commitments can just take up all the time for subbing, but don’t give up Yuki! I’m sure you can find a way to manage your time! I truly hope that you don’t drop Haruhi! You do a great job, and I wouldn’t know who else to go to if you didn’t sub it!
